Padre Island Shipwreck - circa 1554

Early 4 Reales Mexico coin mounted in 14kt Gold bezel - with a Diamond set in pierced hole.

$795.00

In April, 1554, three Spanish naos (a type of cargo and passenger ship similar to Columbus’s Santa Maria) went aground on Padre Island following a storm that had blown them across the Gulf of Mexico from the coast of Cuba. At the time this was the greatest disaster to ever befall the Spanish fleet in the New World. Tons of treasure bound for Spain was lost in addition to the lives of approximately three hundred passengers and crew who died from hunger, thirst, and attacks by natives as they attempted to walk back to the port of Vera Cruz.

The Concepcion was one of the most significant Spanish wrecks of all time, serving the Spanish with a loss of over 100 tons of silver and gold treasure. The almiranta of a 21-ship fleet, the Concepcion was already in poor repair when the Europe-bound fleet encountered a storm in September, leaving her disabled and navigating under makeshift sails amid disagreement among its pilots about their location. Weeks later, she grounded on a reef in an area now named the Silver Shoals

Blackbeards Prize

Dated 1717 , 8 reales , Potosi Bolivia , Heavy 14Kt Gold Bezel  w/20 point Diamond...

$950.00

Edward Thatch, the pirate who came to be known as Blackbeard, is believed to have been born around 1680 in the vicinity of Bristol, England's second most important port. He was given control of various prizes in 1716, but didnt receive his first truly independent command in September 1717. This was the Revenge, the sloop of the wayward gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet, who had shown up in Nassau grievously wounded. Blackbeard used her to attack shipping off the Carolinas, Virginia, and Delaware, then took a direct, offshore passage to the outer rim of the eastern Caribbean, where, on November 28, 1717, he made his most famous capture. Blackbeard's capture of the 250-ton French slaver La Concorde made him one of the most dangerous pirates in the Americas. Blackbeard's gang mounted her with 22 guns and renamed her the Queen Anne's Revenge
